Belviq Cancer Lawsuits

Belviq (lorcaserin) is a weight-loss drug produced by the company Eisai Inc. The drug is meant to help those with obesity and other health issues tied to weight curb hunger. Following studies, Belviq and Belviq XR have been linked to increased cancer risk. Overall, these findings show that this weight-loss pill may pose a danger to those taking it.

FDA Removal of Belviq

After a request from the FDA in 2020, the pill has withdrawn from the market by Eisai. The report states that the “potential risk of cancer outweighs the benefits.” Then, in the same announcement, the FDA suggested that patients taking the pill stop taking it. According to the FDA, a number of different types of cancer were reported in connection with this drug. Lung Cancer, Colorectal Cancer, and Pancreatic Cancer were among those named overall.

The FDA has stated that the cancer link was found through the patients of the initial 5-year trial of the drug. More patients taking the drug developed cancer than those of the placebo group. These findings of cancer have given the FDA grounds to call for the removal of the product. However, the damage may have already been done.
