Tips for Driving Safely During Winter

As winter drags on the driving continues will continue to remain harsh. With the weather that has been occurring across the nation, motorists need to be especially mindful of their actions. By following basic winter travel rules, motorists can help make the winter season safer for themselves as well as their passengers.

Before beginning any long distance trip, a driver needs to make sure that his or her vehicle is tuned up and in good shape, especially in the winter months. When making travel plans, motorists need to be flexible, possibly leaving earlier to avoid peak traffic hours. If the weather report predicts snow and freezing conditions, then drivers need to be prepared to alter their schedules. Each time someone is behind the wheel this winter, he or she also needs to take plenty of breaks, pulling to the side of the road at the first signs of fatigue or drowsiness.

At D’Agostino & Associates, our clients can expect friendly service and constant communication with their personal injury lawyers. For more information, call (888) 860-5787.

Properly Fitting Your Motorcycle Helmet

One of the most effective ways to prevent injury in a motorcycle collision is by wearing a helmet each time you ride. However, it’s equally important to make sure that the helmet you wear fits properly around the size and shape of your head. If you choose a helmet that doesn’t fit correctly, it can fall off during a collision, leaving your head incredibly vulnerable to injury.

In this video, an experienced motorcyclist shows how to choose a properly fitted helmet. As he explains, the size descriptions vary by helmet manufacturer, so you always need to try potential helmets on. When you try on a helmet, hold it by the chin and make sure that it isn’t loose enough to turn all the way around your head.

A Guide to Working While Receiving Social Security Disability Benefits

If you are currently receiving Social Security disability benefits, you may be worried about returning back to the workforce. Even though this hesitation is understandable, the Social Security Administration has certain rules that allow you to work a part-time or full-time job without jeopardizing your monthly Social Security payments. However, before you begin searching for a new employment position, you need to understand exactly what type of work you are eligible to secure.

Trial work period

Through the trial work period, you can experiment with working while still receiving your full monthly benefit amount. For a total of nine months, over a period of 60 months, there isn’t a cap as to how much you can earn without lowering your monthly benefit payment amount. The purpose of the trial work period is to give you the opportunity to determine whether or not you can return to full time employment. If you choose to participate in this program, you need to inform your local Social Security office of the earnings you make each month.

Extended period of eligibility

After your nine-month trial work period is over, you can enter a 36-month extended period of eligibility. During this time, you can continue to receive your Social Security benefits as long as you continue to be disabled and your monthly income is less than the Social Security’s substantial gain activity threshold, which was $1,040 for non-blind recipients in 2013.

Ticket to work program

If you would like to return to work, but your injury prevents you from returning to your previous position, you may be eligible for the ticket to work program. Through this program, you can receive free vocational rehabilitation, schooling, or technical training with the ultimate goal of helping you permanently return to the workforce.

Preventing Winter Car Accidents

With snowstorms, slippery roads, and chilly temperatures, it’s not hard to determine why car accidents tend to increase in the winter months. Even though you may sometimes be at the mercy of other not-so-skilled drivers on the road, there are ways to lower your risk of suffering a winter car accident. With proper preparation and practice, you can learn how to safely navigate slippery, snowy streets.

Learn loose steering

It may seem counterintuitive, but if your front wheels begin to skid on a patch of ice, you need to temporarily let go of the steering. To regain control of your car, shift into the neutral gear and slowly begin to guide the wheels and vision back into the direction you want your car to go.

Turn off cruise control

During the winter season, you shouldn’t rely on cruise control while you are driving over icy hills or slippery roads. Though it may be slightly less convenient, plan on turning your cruise control off for these colder months and just rely on your gas pedal.

Reduce pressure on brakes

You may rely on pumping your brakes during warmer months, but the winter season is time to limit the amount of pressure you put on the brakes. When you need to brake, press on the pedal gently to prevent your wheels from locking up each time you stop. Gently pumping the brakes can also help prevent skidding and sliding to the side of the road when your car comes to a stop.

Distance yourself from snowplows

It is difficult to safely maneuver around snowplows, sanding trucks, and other maintenance vehicles. Instead of trying to navigate your way around these large vehicles, stick to a different route when you see one a few vehicles ahead.

If you are injured in a winter car accident, the personal injury lawyers of D’Agostino & Associates can help. We help people with a variety of legal situations, including personal injury and Social Security disability.
